At Holy Family Cathedral School, we believe that:
By engaging in quality musical experiences, students continue to develop a positive self-concept, a sense of personal accomplishment, self-discipline, critical thinking skills, and an increased capacity for intrinsic reward. As students interact with each other and study music of varying cultures, a respect for diverse cultures and an appreciation for other points of view are heightened.
In addition, because of the ordered nature of the elements of music, students learn to think with increasing complexity. As a result of the creative potential in music, students learn to think in divergent ways. Therefore, it is through organized, sequential instruction that we educate the whole child.
We provide a comprehensive music program utilizing the methods of Orff-Schulwerk (building improvisation and ensemble work through the use of the Orff instruments) and Zoltan Kodaly (using the solfege system for sight singing and reading) to teach the basic elements of: melody, harmony, rhythm, and form to which all other musical elements are related.
In addition to classroom work, our students are featured at:
Annual Christmas Program – all students
Spring Talent Show – students participate by audition
Morning Assembly – classes perform by grade level for thematic events
